I bought my first 3D printer in 2014, a "Printrbot Simple Metal". Naturally, the first thing I used it for was to make toy parts for my kid. 🤣
Amazingly, as of 2025, this is still my only 3D Printer. I've converted it to a heated bed with the simple addition of an ATX power supply and a 150W Silicone Mat Heater, but other than that it's currently still stock. I print primarily from PLA and PETG on it, though I've printed some Nylon and "Wood / PLA" exotic filaments too.
The printer lives in an enclosed cabinet in my garage, where it is controlled by a Raspberry Pi running OctoPrint
My favorite filament brand is Hatchbox 3D, after having mixed / bad experiences with cheaper no-name / generic filament over the years. I was surprised at how much a difference slightly higher quality filament makes in the print quality.
